About the Workshop
Starting with an overview of Romania’s geo-political background, Dorina Nimigean will take you on a trip in time through various regions and talk about spring rituals, from pre-Christian to Easter. She will share with you her love for Romania’s countryside, people, crafts, and food. Be prepared for a feast of breathtaking pictures and the stories behind them, plus videos of villagers and dancers.
You might want to get up and join in a dance, or to learn how to make a Mărțișor. Did you know that the dance Călușarii (photo is Călușarii in the town of Giurgiu, Romania, 1998) emerged from a welcoming spring ritual? Dorina will be happy to answer questions and dispel myths about Dracula, Roma, language, and offer some useful travel tips.
About Dorina
Dorina Nimigean lived in Romania until she was 30. As a geologist, she would camp in different regions for six months of the year, living with the locals, getting to know close up the specifics of the region and enjoying the music, dances, food, and beautiful landscapes. She says “I am so grateful to all of you. Folk dancing away from one’s homeland is such an unexpected treat and comfort. Learning that the old roots can find common ground with new ones, intertwine with many others’, finding hands ready to hold yours, voices to harmonize with, making your steps to sync with those next to you, and now, not even close to you – a new challenge - what a happy experience. Thank you!”
