About the Presentation

Musical Undue Influences: What are the influences by which a musician is induced to play otherwise than by their own free will or without adequate attention to the consequences?

This is a significantly under-researched area of musicology and one we will plumb the depths of with the help of accomplished musicians Audrey Jaber neé Knuth and Ben Jaber during this SOFA presentation! Audrey is well-known in many a dance circle as an exuberant and very motivating fiddle player, and Ben is Principal Horn of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra, as well as a respected Uilleann piper. Together they make a daunting duo and will entertain us with stories, theories about music migration and evolution, play some tunes, as well as answer some of the questions that haunt us in the middle of the night, such as: which came first, the classical or the folk? Is “Wild Moutain Thyme” an Irish or Scottish tune? What are the hottest contra dance tunes going today, and can they be played on the French horn? What motivates you to go beyond the “dots on the pages”?

Bring your questions! Bring your curiosity! Bring your instruments to play along with these two phenomenal musicians!
