Over the many years the Folk Arts Center has run this program, be it at Copley Square, or the Prudential Center, or now at the Rose Kennedy Greenway, we have always had to grapple with The Rain Issue. However, this week, for the first time, we find ourselves dealing with The Heat Issue.
Boston mayor Michelle Wu has declared a heat emergency in Boston for July 15-17. While this does not prevent us from holding Dancing on the Greenway, it certainly gives us reason to evaluate the wisdom of doing so.
I posed the question of cancellation to the people whose not-insubstantial efforts make it happen every week - namely, the dance leaders, musicians, sound people, and schleppers. With a lot of discussion behind the scenes, it was decided that, in the interest of the safety of everyone involved (including dancers), we should cancel the event for Tuesday, July 16.
We entertained various scenarios, including swapping weeks, but ultimately, simply canceling Tuesday night's fun with caller Sue Rosen and musicians Casey Murray, Molly Tucker and Sammy Zakon-Anderson was the most prudent thing to do.
We look forward to seeing you all on July 23, with Janet Yeracaris and Taylor Yeracaris leading international folk dancing on The Greenway!
