Dance the Evenings Away...

As several of our 2023 dance series wind down, and the summer season of camps and outdoor dances fast approaches, our evening dances in Arlington Heights are still going strong for you to enjoy.

Join us this week for:

Thursday Night Folk Dancing on June 1 with programmer Carl Lazarus who will review Pablo Scornik's La Vida Total, danced to Chilean music. In addition, Paula Rosenstock and Sue Rose will each review one of Steve Kotansky's choreographies: the Macedonian dance Tinka and Mahala Mori Shej, a Roma/Hungarian dance.

-- Sue Rose

Friday Night Folk Dancing on June 2 will feature dances from countries spanning the globe, led by Marcie Van Cleave. This is the penultimate Friday night fling of the season (the last one being June 9 with live music by Shining Moon!), trust us -- you don't want to miss either of them!

Stories, Dance and Music

with Bianca de Jong (online)

From Svornato to Kitka ot Gela:

A Trip Into the Rhodopes

On Saturday afternoon, June 3, we invite you to take a trip down memory lane with Bianca as she shares reminiscences, music, and dance, from her 1993 field trip to the Rhodopes in Bulgaria!

She will regale us with stories of her adventures, accompanied by beautiful photos and videos. She will also get us moving by sharing some of the wonderful dances she learned there!

After the workshop all teaching materials, including dance descriptions, music, and instructional videos will be available from the FAC Shop.

June Pinewoods Camp News

Come to the FolkDays!

It's not too late to consider attending FAC's International FolkDays session at Pinewoods, beginning in a mere three weeks (did I really just type "three weeks"?!!).

The Weekend session is full, with a waiting list, but why wait? The FolkDays feature the same tremendous trio of teachers (Sonia Dion, Cristian Florescu, and Jacob Madsen), plus energetic evening dances with the magnificent music of The Flying Squirrel Orchestra. The same brilliantly blue ponds, the same fabulous food, the same boisterous bonhomie, the same quaint cabins, the same convivial crew ... let's see, what other alliterative utterances can I employ to convince you to register now!

Camp Covid Protocols

Over the past many months there have been countless hours of conversation between individuals, committees, and organizations about Covid protocol at camp. All involved were thoughtful and open-minded, and able to see "the other side" - whatever side that may have been.

It is our community's blessing that what puts a session at Pinewoods above all the rest is the camp crew. These are people who have, in many cases, been raised in the community, or, if not, have come to it with open arms. They love Pinewoods, they love the campers, and they work hard every single day all summer to make the magic that the rest of us cherish in our hearts and memories. Last summer, due to the Covid outbreak in June, our FolkDays session was ended early and the July 4 session was canceled completely. This was due in large part because many crew members became sick and camp simply could not run without them.

With an eye towards learning from recent history, the Program Providers (including FAC) and Pinewoods Camp (PCI) have agreed to a set of Covid protocols that include vaccinations, testing and some required mask-wearing. We are doing this not to put a damper on anyone's fun, and not in a "the sky is falling" manner, but, simply put, to protect the crew and the sessions that follow FAC's. For without them, there could be no camp. And with no crew and no sessions, our summers would not be the same.

We trust that you understand and concur with our decision. Would that there had been no pandemic. Would that these past few years be much farther away than they are. But we are keeping the lemonade coming, despite the inconveniences!

From the Executive Director

Brevity - it's a concept!

Short and sweet is what's called for, the order du jour

And I have to admit, it has some allure!

I've been trying to whip up this ditty all day,

But boring tasks like grant writing got in the way.

Now it's time to head home while golden hour's upon us,

This magic light makes us glow like Aphrodite or Adonis!

There's nothing like summer to make one feel light-hearted

Sorry folks Down Under - your winter's just started!

As you can tell, I actually have nothing much to say,

Except I hope all of you have enjoyed a really nice day!
