The Folk Arts Center of New England and Mostly Waltz for Boston are pleased to welcome dance teacher and social dance historian Susan de Guardiola, of New Haven, CT for a weekend of waltz and other workshops, dancing, and fun.

Friday, March 21
- 7:00 - 7:30pm - Check-in
- 7:30 - 8:45pm - Cross-Step Waltz Review & Variations
We’ll work through basic steps and variations for cross-step waltz and then make a game of putting as many variations we can into the standard cross-step waltz mixer! - 9:00 - 10:00pm - Open dancing - DJ'd by Susan
Saturday, March 22
- 9:30 - 10:00am - Practice time
- 10:00 - 11:15pm - Cross-Step Waltz - Intermediate #1
For those moments when you just need to take a break from turning or just scoot around the floor and want to avoid just…walking. We’ll jazz up your waltz walk with extra turns, swivels, scorpions, and rhythm changes then work on pivot technique and seeing how many place we can sneak in some pivots! - 11:30 - 12:45pm - Cross-Step Waltz - Intermediate #2
We’ll play with moves that keep you briefly in one place: rocks and sways, breaks, hesitations, and a stylish dip, then work on a multi-pivot exit sequence. Previous class or previous pivot experience will be helpful. - Lunch break
- 2:00 - 3:00pm - Cross-Step Waltz - Wonderful Waterfalls (Intermediate)
Explore the possibilities of the “waterfall” variation of the turning basic for both leaders and followers with graceful traveling and in-place variations plus the short waterfall traveling sequence from the film La La Land. - 3:15 - 4:15pm - Allemande (all levels)
An 18th century dance whose figures are often used as modern waltz variations. - 4:30 - 5:30pm - Bridgerton Dance Workshop (all levels)
A fun mix of historically inspired and modern movements taken from the popular TV series. - Group Dinner (optional, location tbd, likely Fiorella’s)
- 7:30 - 10:30pm Dance Party - Waltzes and more, DJ’ed by Susan
- 7:30 – 8:20pm – Dance lesson - Sequence Dances from the pre-WWII era.easy, fun, and a little bit silly!
- 8:30 – 10:30pm – Dance Party - Waltzes, couple dances, plus the sequence dances taught earlier, DJ’d by Susan.
- 7:30 – 8:20pm – Dance lesson - Sequence Dances from the pre-WWII era.
Sunday, March 23
- 9:30 - 10:00am - Practice time
- 10:00 - 11:15pm - Cross-step Waltz – Precision Pivaloops (Advanced)
Precise footwork for pivaloops (particularly for followers) with a variety of ways for leaders to flow in and out of the move from the basic turning cross-step, plus a nifty no-hands-pivaloop sequence that shifts the timing and sneaks in some pivots! - 11:30 - 12:45pm - Cross-step Waltz – Checkaloop Sequence (Advanced)
Putting together and breaking apart more elaborate sequences. We'll mix pivots, pivaloops, breaks, free spins, and promenades into one big flowing sequence then look at how to add your own variations or just take your favorite pieces.
Sunday Afternoon
We hope you’ll stay and join us for our regular monthly Mostly Waltz dance 2:00-5:30pm. Enjoy dancing to waltzes of varying styles and tempos, interspersed with other couple dances such as swing, blues, tango, schottis, and hambo. (just pay at the door for this one).

- 3:00 – 5:30pm – Dance Party - Waltzing and couple dancing (music by Audrey Knuth Jaber & Karen Axelrod)
Admission Fees
FAC members, students, and "helpers" are eligible for discount admission. Please check box on the registration form if you're interested in helping at the event for discounted admission (e.g. helping with check-in, sweeping, monitoring the hall during meal breaks, etc.) and we'll be in touch.
